Missions Serving Within Akron


Brown Baggers

Volunteers meet the 4th Wednesday of the month for approximately one hour to pack lunches consisting of sandwiches, fruit and desserts in brown bags. The lunches are delivered to St. Bernard's Hunger Center downtown for distribution the next day to the homeless.


Human Care Team

Human Care is a ministry partnering with 7 Christian-based organizations – 5 locally based and 2 world-wide (LCMS World Relief/Human Care, and Lutheran Bible Translators) - to help change people's lives through budgeted financial support, and participation of our congregation members in a "Mission of the Month" and other volunteer activities for these Christian organizations.

Men and women are needed to volunteer for Human Care Team to organize and help complete activities with our Local Missions, as listed below:


Akron Pregnancy Services

Need prayer support; counseling and teaching volunteers; church liaison; events participation, such as the May “Walk for Life,” Giving Tree at Christmas, financial support, material/in-kind donations. Contact Lee Gsellman or Jacquie Kyle. 


Haven of Rest/Harvest Home

Become a Prayer Partner; volunteer for special projects; donate and/or deliver food (bimonthly), clothing (Jan.), personal care items (June) and toys, games (for Happy Birthday Jesus Party and program). Contact Gina Hedervary.



(Opportunity for People Everywhere in Need Ministry). Volunteer to help serve 5 free hot lunches/year at OPEN M and/or furnish cookies; donate/deliver food; volunteer in Food Pantry; Serve on an event committee such as May 5 Walk for Kids; Bridges out of Poverty Program; mentor boys and girls; donate food bi-monthly; volunteer as week-day receptionist; volunteer in the Free Health Clinic. Contact Volunteer Coordinator, OPEN M, 330-434-0110, or Jacquie Kyle. 


St. Luke Lutheran Community, Portage Lakes

Help plan and attend a Christmas party for St. Luke residents and their caregivers, funded by attendees. Volunteer in many different areas:   Resident activities, church services, clerical/office; crafts; Outings, music, pet visits; reading to residents, and other opportunities. Salvation Army

FLC members and friends "ring the Red Kettle bells” in Nov/Dec. Contact Linda Evans.
